4,000 K or 5,000 K torch: separate light colour from colour rendering
Choosing between a 4,000 K and a 5,000 K torch starts with the appearance of its white light. The higher number does not automatically identify the better torch. For finding an item or reading a household checklist, consider the controls, beam and actual operating mode as well.
What the kelvin number tells you
Colour temperature describes the appearance of light: 4,000 K generally looks warmer than 5,000 K. It is neither the temperature of the torch body nor its light output, which is expressed in lumens. The Department of Energy explains these quantities. We use its definitions here, not its US federal light-bulb purchasing rules.
Record the number on the listing rather than relying on the word “neutral”. Before comparing variants, check that both belong to the same model and generation. A shared photograph covering several options cannot identify the variant that will arrive.
Colour rendering is a separate question
The Department of Energy’s LED guide separates the colour appearance of the source from the colour fidelity of illuminated objects. Colour temperature alone therefore cannot tell you the colour rendering index, or CRI. Matching kelvin ratings do not make two torches equivalent.
In its 2025 position statement, the CIE recommends adopting the fidelity index Rf and reporting it alongside the older Ra during the transition. One index does not describe every aspect of colour quality. When a listing says only “high CRI”, look for the value and exact variant; record missing information as unknown.
Keep three questions separate

Answer each row independently. “I prefer this white” is useful, but different from “this variant has better measured colour rendering”. If your current torch already meets the need, a different kelvin rating on a new listing is not a reason on its own to replace it.
An original example: pick a pouch and read its list
This is a fictional scenario you can try with equipment you already have: a shelf holds a blue pouch, a green pouch and a black-and-white printed checklist. The task is to select the named pouch and read three lines. AN74 has not measured an outcome. The following is a suggested observation procedure.
- Choose a stable position and a comfortable setting permitted by the instructions. Keep the objects, their positions and ambient lighting unchanged.
- Record each torch’s exact variant and mode. Two settings called “medium” do not establish matching brightness.
- Try the same task with each light, keeping beams away from eyes. Note problems such as a reflection on the sheet, a narrow lit area or a hard-to-find switch.
- Ask another person for their view before revealing your preference. Keep differing opinions instead of manufacturing an average score.
- If the torches are different models, limit your conclusion to each complete torch and setting. You have not isolated colour temperature as the cause.

Why beam videos can mislead
Nikon’s white-balance guide demonstrates how camera settings alter image colours. Two automatically adjusted clips are therefore an unreliable basis for comparing tint. To document your own comparison, keep white balance and exposure fixed and state the settings. This makes the method clearer; it does not turn footage into a colour measurement.
